Requirements of a Licensed Electrician

What are the requirements to become a licensed electrician in Iowa? The state of Iowa requires a person to complete an apprenticeship program approved by the U.S. Department of Labor. During this time the person must be licensed as an apprentice. Our apprentices complete four years of book study through an in-house learning program. Throughout the program their brains are packed with lots of information. Some of the important topics they study include electron theory, Ohm's Law, magnetism & energy and grounding . While an apprentice studies, he also learns daily through on-the-job training by a highly qualified electrician. This allows the apprentice an opportunity to put his book knowledge to use. Throughout the four years, as the apprentice's knowledge increases, so does his pay scale .

After the apprentice completes the four year apprenticeship, he has the opportunity to take the Thomas Prometric written exam for a journeyman. If passed, this will enable him to upgrade his state apprentice license to journeyman status. He may then desire to take another Thomas Prometric written test to acquire the title of licensed master electrician. This is the highest and most accomplished rank in the electrical field.

It takes patience and perseverance to become a licensed electrician. Those who make it all the way to the top tend to be highly motivated individuals. We're proud to show you our credentials! Just ask!
